About

The club was first established in 1936 and the first walk took place on Sunday 8th November 1936.  There were 50 members and walks took place on alternate half day Saturdays and a full day Sunday.  Transport to and from the walks was by bus or train.  The name Darlington CHA & HF Rambling Club goes back to the days when the club supported the former Countrywide Holidays Association and Holiday Fellowship.  Countrywide Holidays Association no longer exists and the Holiday Fellowship has over the years changed to HF Holidays.

The club has always been run by volunteers and we very much welcome new members to either just enjoy the walks arranged or take a more active role in the club’s running.

Today we have over 100 members and we walk full days on Saturdays and Sundays throughout most of the year.  We also have some mid-week walks at various times of the year.    All the walks vary in length and gradient so it’s always wise to check our Programme page for full details or contact the leader of the walk in advance if you have any queries.

You don’t need to be a member to join us on a walk.  You can walk with us up to 3 times before joining.  Membership for 2022/23 is £8 per year for over 18’s.  (Under 12 yrs are free and it’s £3 for under 18’s).  This will increase to £12 per year for over 18’s from 1st March 2023.

In addition to the small annual membership fee we collect “goodwill” from members per walk.  This is purely voluntary and a suggested amount is 50p – £1 per walk.  Last year we were able to give money to 5 nominated charities from goodwill donations.   £200 to Great North Air Ambulance and HF Holidays Pathway Fund £100 each to local search and rescue teams – Swaledale, Teesdale & Weardale and Cleveland

Walkers generally meet at a central point in Darlington before a walk so that car sharing can be considered.  We ask that any passengers consider making a voluntary contribution to the driver of the car towards fuel costs.  Anyone wishing to travel to the start of the walk rather than meet at a central location, may do so after contacting the leader for details.

Unfortunately at this time we do not allow dogs on any of our walks.

Please get in touch with one of the members named on the Contact us page for further information and if you’d like to join us for a walk.

In addition to walking weekly we offer some social events.

We have two trips per year with HF Holidays. These take the form of guided walks from various country houses around the UK and are well attended.

Coach trips and meals out are also part of our social calendar.

So if you enjoy walking in our wonderful countryside, give us a try!
