By some curious act of naming, Great Whernside is not as high as Yorkshire’s tallest peak Whernside. But at 704m it is still worth climbing and the views can be far reaching on a clear day. Parking on the moor at Little Hunters Sleeps 10 hikers set off first of all to climb up to the col between Little and Great Whernside. From there views opened up down into Nidderdale and the reservoirs of Scar House and Angram.
Turning right along the ridge we we reached Great Whernside for our elevenses in the shelter. Dropping down towards Kettlewell the weather improved and lunch was taken on a grassy spot above the village. The old track of Top Mere Road was then taken for a climb back to the cars. A wonderful scenic day out for all.
