A very rainy weather forecast meant that 5 members crossed into Cumbria for a 9.5 mile hike.
We decided not to tackle Great Asby Scar in the expected downpours and so headed out from Kirkby Stephen on the westwards C2C route.
through Greenriggs Farm and up on the Smardale Fell dropping down to Scandal Beck we joined the permissive path to Smardale Viaduct
Passing butterfly hunters in Smardale Gill looked pleased that they had found the rare Scotch Angus
The rain was heavy at times but the sun shone in between the showers and as promised, we were dry when we returned to the cars.
Our plan for a post-walk drink in the Black Bull was thwarted by the temporary closure of this hostelry but The Pennine Hotel were pleased to slake our thirst instead.
All enjoyed the day out and we’ll return for the limestone pavement of Great Asby Scar on another occasion
