2021_05_23 Buckden Pike

Leader : Jonathan          Distance : 14 miles

A moderate/strenuous walk today led by Jonathan with an overall days’ walk ascent of 2500 ft.

Our walk started a mile or so from the picturesque village of West Burton.

5 regular club members were joined by Lynne today on her first and hopefully not last, outing with the club.

The fell is at the head of Wharfedale and stands at 702 metres, narrowly missing out on being the highest peak in the area.  The title instead going to Great Whernside at 704 metres which was clearly visible throughout the day.

To the south of the summit there is a memorial cross, dedicated to the memory of five Polish airmen of the Polish Air Force 18th Polish Operational Training Unit based at RAF Bramcote who crashed their Wellington Bomber on 30th January 1942.  The memorial was created by, with help from various locals, the sole survivor of the crash Jozef “joe” Fusniak and completed on 8th August 1973.  Fusniak died in July 2017.

Hard to believe that every year Buckden Pike is host to the Buckden Pike Fell Race where the race record is held by Colin Donnelly who in 1988 completed the course in a time of 30:51.  Needless to say it took us all a little longer to walk up the fell today!

A much deserved post walk drink was had in the Fox and Hounds West Burton.
