Michael reports :-
16 of us left the visitors centre at Fountains Abbey on a bright morning. We passed St Mary’s Church and through Studley Deer Park taking in fine views of Ripon Cathedral in the distance.
We stopped for a coffee break along the side of the lake. A very aggressive swan provided the entertainment by chasing all of the ducks and geese out of the water in one corner of the lake.
The route took us on through the pretty village of Studley Roger and we reached Ripon at lunch time where we found a pleasant spot beside the River Laver to eat our sandwiches.
The return route took us over paths and fields which were very muddy in places due to the heavy rainfall of the last few days but we got a good view of Fountains Abbey in the valley below us.
We returned to the car park along the road past the pretty Westgate entrance to the Abbey. After the walk some of us took refreshment at the Navigation Inn in Ripon while the rest of the group went for an ice cream in the visitors centre cafe.
