Today, “Five go Adventuring Again” from the village of Welburn set amid the rolling Howardian Hills.
Though the rain kept us company for the first few miles, it cleared, as the weather man promised, around 1pm, just in time for our lunch spot beside the river Derwent.
Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty…………… – with which we Five would all agree – after a walk that showed glimpses of the grandeur of the Castle Howard estate throughout. Quiet paths/tracks, fields, steam train routes, an intriguing suspension footbridge, the nature reserve and plantation of Jeffrey Bog, idyllic hamlets of Firby, Low Hutton the Whitwell –on- the- Hill and not forgetting the romantic riverside ruins of Kirkham Abbey!
Post walk drink in the unusually named Crown and Cushion village inn…….
